Organic media:Best Practices For Receiving More Engagement.

In my article ‘why organic has dipped its toes into paid media’ I wrote about why combining organic and paid media is the best way to use your socials. Here I will mention a few best practices for using the organic component of it.

Organic media on platforms like Instagram and Facebook have decreased in organic reach over the years due to more users and posts, changed algorithms, and introducing new features to the platforms. It will never get you as much exposure as paid media, but we can maximise the exposure of organic media.

Organic media will also keep your current audience up to date, which will result in long term relationships, and customer loyalty. It is definitely not out of the game yet.

These are my best practices for organic media to increase engagement:

 Narrow down your organic targeting

Just like paid media, organic posts should be focussed on specific audiences. Because when you target to everyone, you are targeting to no one. A specific audience will give you more quality leads and an overall higher quality score on the platforms. When there is an interest for a certain niche, Instagram will show related posts. So, when you post about something in particular, let’s say travel. Instagram will assume that people who search for travel related stuff will enjoy your post.

But how do you narrow down the audiences?

  •  Be specific. Like I mentioned, when your page is about travel, post about travel and don’t stray from this.

  •  Use related hashtags! Make a list of 10 related hashtags and use at most 3 of them every time you post.

  •  Interact with other pages with similar content. This will show their followers that you have similar content. And you might get some collaborations out of it.

  • Write captions with stories about the related subject.

Work with additional tools platforms offer.

Platforms like Facebook and Instagram have introduced a lot of new features over the past years. Like stories, live, reels, shopping etc. Mastering these new features at an early stage can be very beneficial for your organic engagement, because Instagram likes to reward users who use their new features.

Consistency and relevance are key!

They always say being consistent in life is the key to success. This applies to social media as well. If you have trouble with this here are a few tips:

-       Use preview apps to see what your feed will look like.

-       If you are not good at planning, you can schedule posts through scheduling apps. Using these will allow you to schedule posts for the entire week without posting it yourself in that exact moment.

-       Write captions beforehand so you don’t have to come -up with them every time you post something. Make these captions relevant to your post/product and ask questions so people will engage with your post.

Figure out the algorithm.

The algorithms on the socials have changed a lot which allows the overall organic engagement to drop over the past few years. However, there are still ways to overcome this. Keeping up to date on new trends and outside influences will make this possible. Here is an example.

Now that Tik Tok got so popular, Instagram is trying to make their platform more attractive for posting reels. This means when you post a reel it will become more likely that more users will see this organically. These little things can make a huge difference for your organic reach.

Bring value!!

I always say this, and I will keep saying it: bring value! Everything that is successful requires effort. Nobody wants to see a similar post that has been posted through-out 1000 other accounts already. Bring original content to the table. If you don’t have it, do research, shoot some photos, or make a high-quality video. Also, be human, interact, give valuable tips, and never ask for something in return when doing so.

Organic media is for sure not dead. But it is all about using the right tools, bringing value to it, knowing your audience, and overall, being consistent. It will never be like as it once was. This is why I always promote doing both organic and paid media together to get most out of your potential on socials.
